Bill Wilson’s Retirement

Blogs from January, 2019

After a long and productive career helping the people of San Antonio with their legal needs and working to make the city a better place to raise families, build businesses and enjoy life, the founding attorney of Wilson Law, Mr. William A. Wilson, retired from the firm at the end of 2018. For more than 38 years, Bill practiced law and grew the firm he founded in 1982. But even before that, the die had been cast when a young man, full of ambition and dedication headed to Vietnam prior to college.

After serving his country honorably and willingly through two tours of combat duty as an Infantry (Airborne) officer, Bill returned to the US to begin life anew with his wife, Huguette. Seeking a good, secure life for Huguette and their future children and grandchildren, Bill finished college early, as a Phi Beta Kappa at UT Austin, and completed his law studies at St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1980. Two years later, Bill founded the law firm and built it up slowly through diligent, attentive work for each new client. Soon, he had earned a reputation for hard work, integrity, and working closely with every client for a successful outcome, no matter the legal issues involved.

Even though those early days of the firm were not financially lucrative, Bill had discovered the perfect outlet for his entrepreneurial spirit and for his personal principle of being the best lawyer he could be. Bill has always been passionate about the law and particularly enjoyed the multiple challenges involved with the diverse array of cases that people brought to his desk. His coworkers and clients often noted Bill’s unique level of loyalty to clients and how much he truly enjoyed helping those in need.

Along the pathway of his storied career, Bill spent thousands of hours in and out of the office as an advocate for people who needed legal and other kinds of assistance, honoring his devotion to God in each step he took. In addition to nearly four decades of law practice, Bill mentored many young attorneys, lectured as an adjunct professor at St. Mary’s University School of Law, wrote a book entitled “On Your Own: Starting Your Successful Law Practice & Career,” served on the Board of the Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio, and raised a family.

As 2018 came to a close, Bill retired from the law firm but will continue as an active member of the San Antonio community that he has come to love and cherish. Upon leaving the firm, he transitioned the practice to his partners, Eric Wilson (his son) and Matt Brown. With genuine, heartfelt kindness and love, Bill happily turned the reins of the firm to his two devoted partners and feels confident they will continue dedicating their efforts to each new and established client.

As the Chairman of the Board for the Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio, Bill will continue to pursue his life goals of working hard for the betterment of the city he calls home. Baptist Health Foundation (BHF) is a non-profit organization that helps San Antonio’s citizens. BHF funds clinical, educational, spiritual and scientific projects that further the health of the community while honoring God and the Baptist heritage at the same time. The Foundation’s vision is to be a Godly conduit offering health and spiritual services that help reveal the presence of the Lord in San Antonio.

A family man first and foremost, Bill’s retirement means he will have more time to spend with Huguette and their three grandchildren. Bill and Huguette have also been blessed with two children who have two wonderful spouses. Family life, along with active participation with the Baptist Health Foundation will certainly keep Bill busy in the days ahead.

We congratulate Bill on his phenomenal law career and wish him the best in this new chapter of his life. To a uniquely qualified, dedicated, spiritual man who served his country at the highest level in a time of war, who fully dedicated himself to every client who walked through the door, who generously and compassionately guided his law partners through every conceivable challenge, and who continues to serve his family, friends, church, community and God, we sincerely, tinged with a little sadness at seeing him go, say, “Thank you, Bill. You will always be on our minds and in our hearts. What you have built will continue to grow and prosper and will continue to help those who need our services most, the good people of San Antonio. Farewell good man.”
